Instructions:
VOLUME......................................Adjusts the sound level from the oximeter to the pilot’s headphones. Does not adjust the volume from the aircraft radios.
SENSOR......................................Connector for oximeter sensor.
PILOT HEADPHONES...................Connector for pilot’s headphones.
AIRCRAFT HEADPHONE JACK.....Connector to headphone jack in aircraft.
LOW BATTERY……………....... Light for indicating low battery condition. Audible alert will be sounded in headphones. SpO2 CHECK...............................Button for instant oximeter reading. ON /
OFF.....................................Power
switch. Definitions
Hypoxia-- Deficiency of oxygen to living tissues. Symptoms include headache, nausea, tingling skin, fatigue, dizziness, visual impairment and euphoria.
SpO2-----
Blood oxygen saturation. The oximeter tells you what percentage of your
hemoglobin molecules
are carrying oxygen.
Instructions for use
Ensure the batteries are replaced or checked for sufficient power prior to use of the oximeter unit. This unit uses 2 AA alkaline or rechargeable NiMH or NiCAD batteries. To insert or replace batteries, remove battery door on back of the unit by pressing down and sliding the door toward the bottom of the unit. Insert batteries according to the diagram on the bottom of the battery compartment. When switching the unit on, the low battery light will come on for one second, then turn off if the batteries are sufficiently charged.
Insert the headphone plug of the pilot’s headphones in the receptacle on the OWL labeled 'PILOT HEADPHONES.' Then insert the plug from the OWL labeled 'AIRCRAFT HEADPHONE JACK' into the aircraft headphone jack. The oximeter sensor is connected to the unit through the connector labeled SENSOR.
Turn the aircraft radios and oximeter unit on and adjust the volume of the oximeter unit by turning the volume control until the oximeter unit can be heard and the radios can be heard without interference of either signal. To hear the oximeter “speak,” press the 'SpO2 CHECK' button. IT IS IMPORTANT TO DO THIS BEFORE operating the aircraft radios in any phase of flight as to avoid any communication interference.
Insert finger into the oximeter sensor and wait approximately 5 seconds before pressing the 'SpO2 CHECK' button in order to obtain a saturation reading. The oximeter unit will remain silent unless the 'SpO2 CHECK' button is pressed or an alert message is sounded.
The oximeter unit will provide the following alerts every 30 seconds:
